It’s time for accountable leadership that truly listens. We don’t have to choose between bad options. It’s time for a new way.
Alex Karjeker is a first-time candidate running in his hometown district of the Houston Bay Area. Growing up, Alex’s family heavily emphasized the importance of civic engagement. His maternal grandfather, a Jewish-American, proudly served in WWII and then worked with the US military’s PX system. He met Alex’s grandmother, Victoria Bangug, and her family in the Philippines. Alex’s paternal family, the Karjekers from India, were Anti-Apartheid activists in South Africa fighting for their freedoms and equal rights as citizens.
Though a young candidate, Alex has already amassed a strong set of professional and civic qualifications. After graduating from Clear Lake High School in 2006, he went on to study at the University of Texas. His Bachelors’ Degrees in Mathematics and Economics and subsequent Masters’ Degrees in Public Policy and Economics from Georgetown University means he has an in-depth understanding of tax reform, economic growth, and government reform.
MORGAN STANLEY & UBER ALUM
Alex spent two years at Morgan Stanley’s municipal bond division, where he helped Texas cities fund public infrastructure projects. He then spent three years at Uber, where he first served as a data scientist. He studied how to solve and make improvements in areas such as public transportation, labor earnings, and drunk driving rates. Equipped with a strong arsenal of knowledge on the challenges in public transportation and an economist’s take on how to fix it, Alex joined Uber’s Texas policy team. He successfully lobbied the Texas State Legislature in 2016 for more affordable transportation options and to create more jobs for Texans. His bipartisan bill to make ride sharing companies available statewide, passed with a historic 110 votes in the state house.
Alex has already proven that he knows how to address local issues by working with politicians across the state. He has the civility, creativity and commitment for finding bipartisan solutions for Bay Area residents. Alex’s credentials demonstrate a theme of getting educated on an issues and taking the time to listen, before acting. He firmly believes that we are first and foremost a community. And by working together, we can find the common ground and reform Texas government to work better for everyone.
